Children have a natural attraction to the bright yellow flowers that cover yards and fields.

Why is it important to engage children in nature-inspired activities?

  • They get to be outdoors in the natural elements where they can move their bodies freely.

  • It draws out their natural curiosities of the natural world.

  • They use gross motor skills(running, walking bending, etc.) and fine motor skills(picking, holding, cutting, etc.)

  • They are learning to care for natural things in nature and when they can touch, feel and pick or just use their eyes to observe.

  • This is a fun creative project that can be done anywhere there are Dandelions. Only a few supplies are needed. Adults will prepare and children will create.

Supplies

  • A Piece of card board from an old box or a small box it's self.

  • Permanent marker-adults only

  • Scissors-adult only

  • Dandelions

How to make the project

  • Adults will draw an outline of a shape, such as a heart, butterfly, circle, etc.

  • If you want your child to draw a shape on the cardboard, use washable markers.

  • Poke holes in the center of the shape to place dandelions in.

  • Identifying and harvest dandelions safely and ethically.

  • * Choose mature dandelions with fluffy seed heads or vibrant yellow flowers. Dandelions tend to be the first spring flowers for pollinators, choose an area that has many flowers. *Also watch for signs that indicate that pesticide was sprayed.

  • Have your child pick dandelions to fill the holes that are within the shape.

  • They can watch as the dandelions create a bright yellow butterfly, heart or what ever shape was drawn.

  • Take a picture and then place the dandelions back on the ground were you found them.
